God is Your Piece of the Pie

    January 2nd, 2017

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

    Psalm 73:26

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and so tough sometimes to dig yourself out of one. Sometimes a flip in your perspective, a reminder that God has plans for us, can make it easier. I hope you enjoy this post. I meant to share it awhile ago!!

    {This post in an excerpt from Holley Gerth’s book What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days. Enjoy more of her work at or}

The pie sits in all its glory in the glass case. Over lunch my friend and I stare at it with anticipation. Peanut butter. Whipped cream. Golden crust. Soon it will be ours. It’s a tradition for us to share a slice when we come to this restaurant. And then at the last minute, we watch as a server reaches in and takes the last piece. “Noooooo,” we wail. “That’s our piece”. This may seem dramatic, but then again, you’ve never tasted this pie, have you? You’d wail too. I’m just saying.”

My friend and I look forlornly at our plates and then begin to giggle at ourselves. We laugh because it’s a moment when we remember what it means to  be human-to long for something (sometimes quite silly) and then to be devastated when we don’t get it.

Asaph, the writer of the psalm above, describes how he went through a period of deep frustration in his life. This was about far more than pie. Everywhere he looked it seemed like the wicked were getting the good stuff while he was left empty-handed. “What gives?” he seemed to ask God. “I follow you faithfully, yet those who act like you don’t even exist are getting my slice.” Then Asaph makes a trip to the temple and his perspecitive changes. He realizes what the ungodly are getting is ultimately temporary and unsatisfying. He finally declares, “God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

When we’re going through a hard time, it’s easy to be like Asaph. We start looking at those around us and believing everyone else has it better than we do.

Her piece of the pie is a perfect body.

Her piece of the pie is an insanely happy marriage.

Her piece of the pie is a house that could be in a Pottery Barn catalog.

Of course, all of these are exaggerations, and we don’t know the full story that might be unfolding in what looks like an ideal life.

But pain can skew our perspective. Then we begin to feel like God is holding out on us. We’ve been so faithful, and then he just gives the piece of pie we deserve to someone else (insert whining here if you’re like me).

Yet God walks around the corner with a plate in his hand and says, “I saved this for you. It’s the best piece of all. It’s your portion.” And what he offers is astounding. The God of the universe gives himself. He is I Am. That means in whatever circumstance, he is what we need.

I Am peace when the doctor delivers bad news.

I Am hope when one more month goes by and you’re not pregnant.

I am strength when it feels like you can’t go on another day.

God is our portion, and here’s the best part: he can never be consumed. There will always be more of him for whatever we need. Our hearts never have to go hungry, because we can always say the prayer he loves to answer: “More of you, please.”

Fall Coasters with Mary & Martha Give Thanks Napkins

    September 7th, 2016

Mary & Martha DIY Napkin Coaster

It’s September and I can post about Fall now…right? I know, it doesn’t officially start until the 22nd, but football and school are here so that’s enough for me. I have been a crafting machine this last week preparing for 3 Fabric Garland Make n Takes and doing mockups for new ones.

One of the first crafts I’m going to share are these super cute coasters the kids & I are making using Mary & Martha’s washable, reusable cocktail napkins. These beautiful napkins feature lettering by Mary & Martha partner Lindsay Letters.

These coasters are great for gifts (friends, teachers, etc.) I was able to get 10 bundles of 4 out of one roll!! The tiles were .16 each at Home Depot, the Cork Roll $3.49 at Michaels (+ a coupon!)

    Here is what you need:

    • Modge Podge
    • Cork Roll
    • Scissors
    • Sponge brush or paint brush
    • Craft glue
    • Clear acrylic polyurethane or spray
    • Mary & Martha Give Thanks or Adore Him Cocktail Napkins
    • 4″ x 4″ (actual size 4-1/4″ x 4-1/4″) ceramic tiles – gloss, matte, or flat

    1. Trim the cocktail napkins on all sides so that half of the binding on the edges remains. The picture above shows the original size of the napkin on the roll and the napkin cut down and laying on the tile.

(Side note: I tried to trim it so the the edges were rough but it was too “messy” for my taste.)

    2. Brush a thin layer of Modge Podge directly to the tile. Lay the napkin on top of the tile/Modge Podge.

    3. Brush another layer of thin Modge Podge right on top of the napkin, covering the entire surface. The image will appear cloudy. Don’t worry!

    4. Wait 20 minutes or until the image is clear again (most dry) to apply a second thin layer. Repeat for a third layer. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

    5.  Cut cork roll in squares approx. 1/4″ shorter in either direction than the size of the tile. Adhere with glue or hot glue gun.Cork Backing

    6. Spray or brush with clear acrylic to seal. (Optional but recommended)

Please comment below with any questions. Shop for these napkins & more here!

    Happy Fall!! <3 Jessica

My New and Exciting Adventure as a Mary & Martha Independent Consultant

    October 20th, 2015

I am so excited, nervous, and hopeful to share something with you!

I can tell how excited I am as it took about 15 minutes of staring at my computer screen just to decide upon a worthy enough title for this post, so the excitement level is pretty high right now!

Six years ago when I began planning my wedding, I was reconnected with a high school friend who was an event planner at our wedding venue back in Dayton, Ohio. I was introduced to Mary & Martha through her when she was a consultant with several direct sell businesses. I bought several pieces from her (the first was the tray just below these words) and was hooked!  I knew I was going to be a long-time, enthusiastic customer. As an interior designer, I love the classic simplicity of so many of their products. As a Christian woman and mother I love universal messages of scripture conveyed with so many of their products.

So….fast forward to a year later, I receive a promotional email for their October hostess kit that is only $99?! How could I go wrong?  This company just seems to get better and better with the designs of their products. Seriously. I did a thorough review, and decided to ask Melissa a few questions (of course I wanted free stuff, shhh). Side note, Melissa Selner is now a very successful presenter with Younique and residing in Florida!! Thank you Melissa!

    October Mary & Martha Kit

I quickly added a love for the company, and the desire to be a part of it, to my excitement about the products themselves.  I also took a look at my personal life and realized that Mary & Martha was brought to me at just the right moment.

As you might know, I am currently a stay-at-home Mom. My part-time career is running my own stationery design business, The Paper Plume.  I am so blessed to have the flexibility that owning my own business offers because of what has transpired over the past five years of my life. Although there are so many wonderful things about having The Paper Plume, the downside to owning and running a small business such as this is that when kids schedules become fuller and fuller I do not have the option to call someone and say, “Hey, I am going to take some leave, you are going to have to finish the orders and keep the business running.”

Needless to say, I occasionally have to turn business away, do not always get things done as quickly as I’d like, and I didn’t provide for my family as I would have liked this past year.

    Enter Mary & Martha.

I will not go into a lot of the details in the post, but after looking through all that Mary & Martha has to offer, I am impressed at how generous the company is to Independent Consultants. Mary & Martha really does make it SO easy for Independent Consultants to thrive and achieve whatever financial or personal success they set out to accomplish. And everyone is so supportive of each other!!

Aside from the financial aspect, I am really excited for what Mary & Martha can provide for me socially.  Now that we’ve been back in Pittsburgh for a couple of years and the kids are a little bit older, I am realizing that I am longing for something that “forced” me to get dressed, get outside of the house, talk with people, make new friends, socialize with old friends, and simply put: have fun and laugh!

Shared experiences. Inspiring products. Welcome, serve & connect. That’s Mary & Martha!

Therefore, I am happy to announce that I am one of the newest Mary & Marthy Independent Consultants!

    Mary & Martha Logo

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and for letting me pour out some of my feelings a bit here on the blog today!

And, of course, now I have to ask you something:

Want to help me get off to a great start?

I would love to have a party with you and some of your friends!  Who can say no to a Fun & Fabulous Gathering with Friends and/or Family?  Just need a girls night? Or, maybe you just want me to mail you a catalog.  Even if you are not in my local area, we can still gather together with an online Facebook or catalog party. Did I mention you can earn 1/2 off and free items just from a party?

If you have any inkling of helping me get off to a great start {or just help me get out of the house for a little bit of fun}, let me know here.

Or, have I piqued your interest and now you want to learn more about the Mary & Martha opportunity?  I would love to tell you all about it!  Although I may be new, I am not new to the direct sales world and I would love for you to join my team so that we can both help each other grow in success and in life!  Fill out this form to get started on your own Mary & Martha journey!

If neither the party or the opportunity interest you, but you would like to shop for yourself or loved ones, you can always shop online at my Mary & Martha website.

And, of course, I would love to have you as a fan over on my new Mary & Martha Facebook page where I will post all things Mary & Martha related.  I may even throw out some freebies to my Facebook fans every now and then, so head on over to my Facebook page and give me a big ol’ like!
